Tromilux lighting: Oficinas Diagonal
Office refurbishment on Avenida Diagonal: An illuminated space with Tromilux solutions
The offices to be refurbished, designed by architect Nicola Tremacoldi, occupy part of the third floor of an emblematic building on Barcelona's Avenida Diagonal. Originally designed in 1969 by the architects Fargues and Tous, the building has undergone a transformation to optimise the functionality and lighting of the workspaces. Tromilux played a key role in the project, providing lighting solutions that guarantee visual comfort, energy efficiency and integration with the modern design of the space.
The new spatial organisation is based on a modular and flexible furniture system that promotes a collaborative and fluid environment. As the functional programme did not include a reception or public service area, the entrance was used to create a communal space, including a pantry and a rest and dining area.
Lighting and Space Organisation
Artificial lighting played a key role in the renovation. Linear profiles supplied by Tromilux were used and adapted to the desks, creating a visually integrated and organised structure. This solution not only improves the uniformity of light, but also contributes to the energy efficiency of the room.
In addition, the lighting layout has been designed to maintain a balance between natural and artificial light, creating a more comfortable and productive working environment. Cupboards and filing cabinets have been strategically placed under the windows and along a 'dead end' corridor to optimise the use of space.
The choice of materials and construction solutions reflects the intention to concentrate essential services and functions in a central space. To this end, a continuous microcement floor has been laid in the communal areas, while the heart of the office is highlighted by a terrazzo circle.
The Transformation of Space
Prior to the refurbishment, the office was disorganised, with separate areas for customer service, meeting rooms and management, and did not make good use of natural light. The modern building has a vertical metal structure made up of hyperstatic porticos, lightened reinforced concrete slabs with ceramic tiles and a Corten steel façade with aluminium windows. This structural configuration allowed for a free floor plan, favouring a more efficient and illuminated reorganisation.
The renovation proposal aimed to maximise natural light and create an open environment, eliminating visual barriers and providing a dynamic workspace. The absence of partitions allows light to reach all areas, including the central areas, promoting a sense of spaciousness and connectivity.
An Office Inspired by Urban Spaces
The main concept of the renovation was inspired by the idea of an open public space, similar to a town square. The centre of the office functions as a 'forum', surrounded by different work areas - Human Resources, Finance, Management and Meetings - that resemble the buildings around this square.
To maintain transparency and minimise visual barriers, glass closures and a polygonal system were used to reduce the structural impact of the columns. Lighting played a crucial role in this approach, ensuring that the entire space benefited from an even distribution of light without creating areas of shadow or visual discomfort.
The rest and dining area has been designed as a small forest, creating a relaxing atmosphere, with species selected for their aesthetic value and aroma, such as birch, white poplar, cedar, holm oak and eucalyptus.
Technical details and materials
Inside the work areas, the floor is made of highly resistant PVC with a wood-imitating finish. The ceiling has been adapted to accommodate the technical infrastructure, ensuring maximum height in the central area. To improve acoustic comfort and safety, a covering of rock wool has been used to provide thermal insulation and fire protection.
The lighting was carefully designed and supplied by Tromilux, with solutions that balanced aesthetics, functionality and sustainability. The use of linear profiles and strategically positioned luminaires created a well-lit and energy-efficient environment, contributing to the innovative concept of the project.
With this renovation, the office has been transformed into a more functional, open and luminous space, where interaction and the well-being of the employees have been placed at the centre of the architectural proposal. Tromilux is proud to have been part of this project, providing lighting solutions that combine design and technology to create a more efficient and comfortable working environment.
