Remote work: Tips for optimal lighting at home

The pandemic caused by the Covid-19 virus took the world by surprise earlier this year, leaving millions of people at home.

Suddenly we saw all our routine and normality disappear and we had to quickly adapt to the new reality of these times. The world of work was no exception and was greatly affected, with thousands of people losing their jobs and many more having to work from home for the first time.

In addition to seeming a simple concept, teleworking requires a well-defined and suitable area for work, which ensures all the conditions for the performance of the various functions inherent to your position.

In many homes there is already a designated area, the office, which can be used to work from home during these days.

However, a large part of people do not have a defined or created space for the purpose of working from home. However, through careful organization it is possible to adapt your space in the best way to be able to reconcile your existing decor with the demands of a workplace and productivity.

A computer and internet access are the basic requirements, but lighting also plays a key role in creating a space suitable for work, concentration, creativity and focus.

It certainly won't be necessary to change all the lighting in your home. You should mainly focus on defining your new work area and pay special attention to your new work surface.

Here are some tips that can help organize this task:

General lighting

In the case of general lighting, which you certainly already have at home, it will be enough to make sure that it provides even and well-distributed lighting throughout your space. This is the first “layer” of lighting and is very important for the functioning of the division, even before teleworking.

Area lighting

Area lighting is responsible for lighting that seeks to provide light in the specific area where you are going to work, such as a table or desk. This lighting can be obtained through a suspended luminaire positioned directly on the table, for example. Normally this will also be an existing lighting. Otherwise, it will certainly be a good bet.

Spot lighting

Spot lighting is really what you can change or add to make your new workspace more functional. This kind of lighting helps to draw attention to a more specific place, like your computer keyboard for example. You can choose table or desk lamps, which provide greater flexibility of movement, to help you work in the best conditions.

Well-planned lighting is something already well established during the design of offices and workspaces. However, the lighting in our house may not have been designed with the aim of providing an appropriate environment for the performance of work functions.

However, as we already know, the risks associated with poor lighting in workplaces are extensive and potentially serious. So you may need to make some minor changes to your existing lighting scheme, for the sake of your well-being and health.
