How to properly recycle a light bulb?

Bunch of light bulbs together
Have a broken light bulb at home and not sure how to dispose of it safely? Then this week's article is for you! Find out how to get rid of your broken light bulbs ensuring the safety of the environment and those around you.

Did you think you could put your light bulbs in the green ecopoint or in the common rubbish bin? Then I have bad news for you! Know that you should never put light bulbs in your recycling or household waste.

The lamps contain substances that are dangerous for the environment and public health, so when you put them in the garbage can or in the green recycling bin, they will surely break and release these substances, such as mercury. In addition, almost all lamps can be recycled, when treated correctly, as they are composed of 90% glass that can be used in the production of new lamps or for applications in civil construction.

But then the question arises of how to recycle a light bulb correctly?

This is where Electrão – Associação de Gestão de Resíduos and ERP Portugal come in. They manage the integrated system of WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) and RPA (waste batteries and accumulators) and manage the collection and forwarding for recycling of our used light bulbs. All over the country there are exclusive collection points for light bulbs present in numerous supermarkets and large areas with easy access to the population. The Eletrão Network covers fluorescent, tubular, ultraviolet and compact lamps, with discharge of sodium vapor, metallic vapor, mercury vapor, LED and Xenon.

So you no longer have an excuse to continue to throw away your light bulbs incorrectly, which can put your health and that of others at risk, as well as harm our environment.
